The process of Discovery is alive and well during the research phases of the thesis paper project for 7th grade Geography. First the students documented their notes on large butcher paper, allowing them to draw information from three types of sources. (This idea was stolen from Ms. Kochel and Ms. Lander. :)) Then, after stewing around and learning about global warming and climate change, the students began to develop their topic, then thesis. Only at that time were they allowed to begin research specifically on their thesis statement. By being very deliberate in separating the "stages" of research and slowing the whole thing down, the students produced meaningful and powerful research papers.
