Beyond the classroom
Galloway students maximize their time learning beyond the walls of Galloway. Many of these experiences are now a permanent part of the curriculum. Additionally, our culture of learning easily finds time for experiences in the world beyond Galloway. Some of the programs include:
Friday Afar The High Museum Outdoor Education
Excursion Immersion Field of Stream
Fridays Afar is a planned Friday where all the 7th graders participate in a set of learning experiences outside of Galloway. For example, the first trip was a day at the Blue Heron Nature Preserve. The next Friday Afar was trip to Emory University and the High Museum.
One of the many experiences Beyond the Classroom offered to the Upper Learning students is Excursion. This is a one week offering where the students select different opportunities to experience. There are over 15 options, varying from outdoor adventure racing to attending a criminal trial in Federal Court.
Every fall, the 4th through 8th grade students participate in a multi-day outdoor education program. These programs and the curriculum for them are coordinated with our faculty and usually supported by an outdoor leadership company like Adventure Treks. Each outdoor experience is designed to engage the students in collaboration, leadership and character skills.
In the Spring, the Middle Learning students immerse themselves in their theme. Each grade chooses a theme in the beginning of the year. Throughout the year, the theme is referenced, researched and put into context. In the Spring, the theme is celebrated in a one week immersion experience.
Lucky for Ms. Jemsby, the 7th grade theme was food!
Annuall the Middle Learning 6th graders take one entire school day and move it to a creek. Content from all classes are covered, but they occur in and around Nancy Creek.
On February 24, 2014, the entire Galloway School, (750 students, plus faculty and staff), moved into the High Museum for a High Energy Day. That experience served as a launching point to explore all of the possibilities available for learning beyond the walls of the classroom.
